‘THE FRIENDS’

Welcome to the Friends of Truro Cathedral website. The original Cathedral Union was formed in 1889, making it one of the first
Cathedral Friends organisations in England. It was reorganised into the Friends of Truro Cathedral in 1932. For over one hundred years the
Friends have been responsible for many initiatives that have enriched the spiritual and social life of the Cathedral. They were responsible
for the creation of the Cathedral shop in 1987, and also in the development of the Cathedral refectory. In addition the Friends have
financed numerous other undertakings, and are currently committed to an ambitious programme of expenditure, details of which can be found
under the ‘Projects’ link.
To complement their fund-raising function, the Friends also see that they play an important social role in the life of the
Cathedral. To this end they have developed in recent years an annual programme of social events in and around Truro that have been very
well supported. Many of the Friends actively support the various volunteer teams of guides, stewards, speakers, etc which provide such a
rich and fulfilling variety to the life of the cathedral.
Membership of the Friends is concentrated in the Southwest, but includes members from throughout
the country and, indeed, the world who wish to maintain their links with Cornwall’s Cathedral. Members receive an annual report. They are invited
to two general meetings in Truro each year with a full programme of speakers, tours, refreshments and services in the Cathedral. They are
encouraged to be involved in the various fund-raising activities that support the Friends’ projects, and also to participate in the social
programme. Friends benefit from discount rates in the Cathedral shop and restaurant. Full details are found on the Membership link
